Studio policies

A few things worth knowing before your first visit — written plainly, and with your dog’s comfort in mind.

An important item of note

Dog restrictions

After many years in this work, we know that any dog — regardless of breed or mix — can be the sweetest companion to their family. Even so, DC Petropolis reserves the right to decline grooming services for the breeds listed below, and any mix that closely resembles them. We generally work with dogs up to 60 lbs, and make some exceptions for bigger dogs depending on the details.

We understand this policy may be disappointing to some owners, and we don’t take it lightly. It comes from real experience; some of it genuinely frightening. Combined with the physical realities our groomers work within day to day.

Grooming asks a lot of a dog: unfamiliar hands, loud tools, and moments of real discomfort like nail clipping or ear cleaning. A dog who is easygoing at home can respond very differently once separated from their owner, in a new environment, under stress. We’ve seen firsthand how quickly that can shift — and for certain breeds, their size and strength mean the stakes of that shift are simply higher than we’re able to safely take on.

Please know this policy isn’t a judgment of any dog or breed. It’s about protecting everyone in our care — our clients, their pets, and our team — and being honest about where our comfort and safety limits lie.

Keeping the studio calm

Behavior

If a dog shows any kind of aggressive behavior toward other dogs or toward our groomers, including during grooming itself, we unfortunately would be unable to continue providing service.

This policy helps us maintain a low-stress environment and ensure the safety of both the other animals in our care and our staff.

Our approach

How grooming is done here

We’re a boutique-style grooming studio, giving each dog the proper amount of time and care they need to get through their grooming process. We take our time to do right by your dog — and by us.

Our staff is an integral part of this process, and we strive to give each individual dog, and each person on our team, the time and comfort they need to be successful.

  • No muzzles, no hard restraints

We do not use hard restraints of any kind — no muzzles, no “Groomer’s Helper” devices, no other restrictive tools. Trust isn’t something we force a dog into by pushing them through a process; it’s something we earn, with each dog, every single session.

  • Never more than 5 dogs a day per groomer

We keep a low ratio of dogs per groomer — no more than five in a day. We place our value on quality of time, not quantity of grooms.

  • No two-hour tables

We don’t offer “start to finish” grooming. The process is broken into three stages, with breaks built in whenever a dog needs more time to feel comfortable.

  • Dryers with no heat

We use dryers without heating elements. It takes longer, but your dog stays completely safe and comfortable. Crates are used only for drying — the rest of the day they’re playing or lying on the floor, not confined.

  1. 1

    Pre-cut & sanitary cleaning

Your dog arrives, and we start with a pre-cut and the sanitary work first.

  2. 2

    Bath & dry

A shampoo and conditioner, followed by a gentle drying period in a crate with a soft flow of room-temperature air until they’re completely dry.

  3. 3

    Final brush & cut

Once fully dry, your dog returns to the table for their final brush-out and finishing cut.

A gentle reminder

Matted doggy?

At DC Petropolis, we prioritize sanity over vanity. Dematting isn’t just unpleasant and risky for a dog — more importantly, it can leave behind an emotional experience the dog has no way of understanding. That kind of fear lingers, and it can make every future grooming visit harder than it needs to be.

For this reason, we limit dematting to small areas only — ears, mustache, and tail. We do not demat beyond that. If we find a few minor mats we’re able to work through safely, a small dematting charge may apply. For dogs who are severely matted, we’ll clip the coat down, with the owner’s approval, rather than put them through unnecessary distress.

Good to know

Drop-off & pick-up

We’re a small grooming studio in the Shaw neighborhood, and we strive to provide the best service and peace of mind — knowing that while your dog is with us, they’re under exceptional care.

Our studio’s front door faces 9th Street, which is busy at all hours of the day. To help maintain a safe, calm environment, we schedule drop-offs between 9:45am – 12pm and pick-ups between 2:30pm – 5:30pm. This limits how often our doors open during business hours and gives your dog and their groomer uninterrupted, quality time together, free from the distraction of people coming and going.

Owners will receive a text (or an email, if you’ve asked us not to text you) letting them know when their fluffy friend is ready for pick-up. We recommend waiting for that message before heading over — arriving beforehand may mean waiting outside until we’re ready for you.

Why we ask to see your dog often

Regular visits

We ask to see every dog at least once every 8 weeks, and make some exceptions depending on the details. There are important reasons behind this policy, primarily coat condition, skin health, and maintaining positive grooming behavior, so sessions never become stressful for your dog — or for us.

Please note

Cancellations & extra fees

We understand that life gets busy. Schedules shift, plans change, and every so often, Fluffy’s appointment slips your mind. Cancellations happen — we truly understand. That said, each appointment holds a place in our day that could otherwise go to another dog in need of care.

We ask for at least 24 business hours’ notice ahead of your appointment. When that isn’t possible, the following applies.

Late cancellations
1st occurrence$30
2nd occurrence$50
3rd within 12 monthsNo further appointments
No-shows
1st occurrence50% of service cost
2nd occurrence100% of service cost
3rd within 12 monthsNo further appointments

We also ask that recurring appointments be kept within an 8-week window, which allows us to properly maintain your dog’s coat and comfort.

Second time$47 fee
Third time within 12 monthsWe can no longer book your dog

We know these policies can feel firm, but they exist so we can continue giving every dog — and every groomer — the time and care they deserve, without the strain of last-minute gaps in our day.
